YOU CAN PLAY. CANUCKS FIGHT HOMOPHOBIA IN HOCKEY!

You Can Play is hockey’s version of the It Gets Better Project which Mulgrave’s Upper School supported for Anti-Bullying Pink Day. NHL players continue to join Patrick Burke’s You Can Play initiative, which aims to fight “casual homophobia” in hockey. Ryan Kesler and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canuks are two of the latest players to join the cause.

Considering the widespreak homophobia directed at Daniel and Henrik — quoted repeatedly in media as “the sisters” (sic) —  it’s great to see the Canucks speaking up publically about homophobia in hockey. See Kesler and Hank below talking with Xtra about the rights of gay and athletes…

ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES AWARENESS CAMPAIGN @ MULGRAVE APRIL 10

Notice some Senior School students without shoes at Mulgrave? They are raising awareness about the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life by taking off their own. Why? Millions of children live without proper footwear, exposing them to injury and disease every day.

Want to know more? Ask lead organiser Lauren Y G11 youngl@mulgrave.com or visit www.onedaywithoutshoes.com. You can also speak to Mr Wilson for more info awilson@mulgrave.com.

MULGRAVE BOOK DRIVE FOR THE CANUCK FAMILY EDUCATION CENTRE (CFEC)

The BookPals CFEC Club Book Drive takes place until the end of the week.  CFEC focuses on helping families of the porest postal code in Canada increase their literacy rates. Everyone is encouraged to help the readers at the Canucks Family Education Centre by donating some gently used books.  There will be bins in the lobby indicating different reading levels corresponding to grades (K-12) as well as books for adults. Last year, we collected over 3500 with your help; we hope this is year is even more successful.  On April 13th there will be a school Canuck’s Apparel/Jersey Day for those who bring in 2 or more used books on THAT DAY. NOTE: you will still have to wear your uniform underneath.

If you have any questions please email Ameeqa Ali (alia@mulgrave.com).

WALK SO KIDS CAN TALK 2012:

Every day, Kids Help Phone’s professional counsellors hear from kids who are experiencing the cruelty of bullying, the loneliness of depression, the paralyzing fear of anxiety, or are feeling the pressures to succeed, compete, or conform. As a charity, Kids Help Phone relies on the generosity of donors to ensure the 6.5 million young people in Canada have continued access to free, professional counselling, information and referrals, when and how they need it most.

This year’s Walk will take place in more than 40 communities across Canada. It’s a fun, non-competitive 5 km route that draws thousands of participants who are stepping forward as one community for one cause: kids. Join Canada’s largest walk to support child and youth mental health and well-being.

The Walk for Kids Help Phone is coming this spring and Margaret and Emma B, team leaders, want you to join in. Please contact Margaret bertonm@mulgrave.com or Mr Wilson to get registration details.

WAR IS FOR KIDS :: ACTION FOR WAR CHILD @ MULGRAVE

We are very pleased to announce that the highly successful Senior student-run G8-9 Middle School Global Action (MGA) Symposium is on again for the fifth consecutive year. This time the simulation focus has shifted from Invisible Children, to “Action for War Child”, highlighting the conflict and strife of war and the empowerment of children during times of crisis.

The event will be happening from the afternoon of Friday, April 27th to the morning of Saturday April 28th. Over the past years, student participants and parents alike have praised this “global citizenship” activity as one of the best experiential learning opportunities offered at Mulgrave – student-centred, action-oriented, engaging, and eye-opening.

For more information see the attached letter or contact Mark B G11 bakhetm@mulgrave.com, the lead student coordinator. You can also speak to Mr Wilson awilson@mulgrave.com.

Disclaimer

TMC posts presents a diversity of perspectives and approaches on social good and youth engagement that strive to make the world a better place. The views expressed here do not necessarily represent those of Mulgrave School or me, the blogger, for that matter. The goal of this space is to raise awareness on student life happenings at Mulgrave and beyond, and to provoke positive and critical engagement as 21C global citizens. It is hoped, in true IB fashion, that while youth will explore initiatives or views posted here, they will also question, challenge and reflect further on what they read; they will not simply accept what things as given, but will critically dig in to learn the big picture, including alternative perspectives.
