GREEN TEAM BATTERY DRIVE IS ON TO SAVE LIVES! HAPPY EARTH WEEK

This year during Earth Week you are encouraged to drop off your batteries for recycling in the MS and SS offices. The Me 2 We club has also joined up with the Green Team and will be collecting recycled batteries from this drive that can be used for the We Day drive that helps save the lives of children with zinc deficiency. See below.

Fighting Zinc Deficiency – Battery Collection for We Day http://www.zincsaveslives.com/we-are-teck/we-day/

Teck’s Zinc and Health initiative to collect old, used batteries. By doing this you are helping to keep batteries out of landfills and allowing the precious zinc inside to be recovered and reused. Did you know that one third of the global population is zinc-deficient and an estimated 800,000 people die per year from related and treatable causes such as diarrhea – 450,000 of which are children in the developing world under the age of five. The zinc from recycled batteries  collected at We Day will be turned into sachets of zinc sprinkles by Zinc and Health, and delivered as a life-saving treatment around the world. Just one AA battery has enough zinc in it to save the lives of six children. What batteries can zinc be recovered from?  The answer is only AAAs, AAs, Ds, 9Vs or any combination of the above. Venue entrances at We Day will contain bins for battery collection. For more information, speak to Mr Wilson awilson@mulgrave.com.

ONE DAY ON EARTH PREMIER'S FOR EARTH DAY! via mashable.com

Eighteen months after thousands of volunteer filmmakers in every country on the planet shot 3,000 hours of footage in one day, One Day on Earth will have the most widespread one-day premiere in history.

The film will be screened for free at the U.N. General Assembly in New York. The film is an entirely crowdsourced project, inviting anyone to join the shooting process. Its website has become a social hub for filmmaker members, who can post updates and photos, and connect with other members.

WAR IS FOR KIDS, RIGHT? :: ACTION FOR WAR CHILD @ MULGRAVE THIS FRIDAY

We are very pleased to announce that the highly successful Senior student-run G8-9 Middle School Global Action (MGA) Symposium is on again for the fifth consecutive year. This time the simulation focus has shifted from Invisible Children, to “Action for War Child”, highlighting the conflict and strife of war and the empowerment of children during times of crisis.

The event will be happening from the afternoon of Friday, April 27th to the morning of Saturday April 28th. Over the past years, student participants and parents alike have praised this “global citizenship” activity as one of the best experiential learning opportunities offered at Mulgrave – student-centred, action-oriented, engaging, and eye-opening.

For more information see the attached letter or contact Mark B G11 bakhetm@mulgrave.com, the lead student coordinator. You can also speak to Mr Wilson awilson@mulgrave.com.

WALK SO KIDS CAN TALK 2012:

Every day, Kids Help Phone’s professional counsellors hear from kids who are experiencing the cruelty of bullying, the loneliness of depression, the paralyzing fear of anxiety, or are feeling the pressures to succeed, compete, or conform. As a charity, Kids Help Phone relies on the generosity of donors to ensure the 6.5 million young people in Canada have continued access to free, professional counselling, information and referrals, when and how they need it most.

This year’s Walk will take place in more than 40 communities across Canada. It’s a fun, non-competitive 5 km route that draws thousands of participants who are stepping forward as one community for one cause: kids. Join Canada’s largest walk to support child and youth mental health and well-being.

The Walk for Kids Help Phone is coming this spring and Margaret and Emma B, team leaders, want you to join in. Please contact Margaret bertonm@mulgrave.com or Mr Wilson to get registration details.

Disclaimer

TMC posts presents a diversity of perspectives and approaches on social good and youth engagement that strive to make the world a better place. The views expressed here do not necessarily represent those of Mulgrave School or me, the blogger, for that matter. The goal of this space is to raise awareness on student life happenings at Mulgrave and beyond, and to provoke positive and critical engagement as 21C global citizens. It is hoped, in true IB fashion, that while youth will explore initiatives or views posted here, they will also question, challenge and reflect further on what they read; they will not simply accept what things as given, but will critically dig in to learn the big picture, including alternative perspectives.
