Silver Duke of Ed

We went kayaking on the Gulf Islands from April 17th to 19th, which was three days and two nights. As we had too many people participate in this trip this years, we were divided into two groups. I was in the first group with my friends. We learned how to get into the kayak appropriately, read map, and so on. My experience of doing outdoor trip have accumulated even more after this trip. Fortunately, the weather was sunny and beautiful on the first and second days. We also got the opportunity to take a walk around the island on the first day, even though I was tired from kayaking. I still felt excited and took many pictures. We spent our wonderful afternoon on the grass, enjoyed the sunshine and nature on the second day. We also had a lesson about different type of tides in the water. There was a challenge when we went back from the islands. The wind stopped our kayak and we had to kayak very hard in order to keep going forward. Gladly, we finally made this. This trip was a wonderful experience for me in grade ten and I am really looking forward to the Gold Duke of Ed next year.

Service Reflection

Mandarin Buddy was one of my services at school in grade 10. I was helping a grade seven student, who takes Mandarin course at school. We met each other every Friday from 1:30 to 2:00.As a student from Mandarin HL, I helped him with his everyday homework and prepared for his next lesson. My first task was help him prepare for his presentation. I corrected his pronunciation and grammar during our meeting.

Action Reflection

This year I decided to participate in the Silver Duke of Ed with my friends. We started planning our trip since September and met every Wednesday at lunch time. We were divided into different groups to work on the plan.  As this was a new experience for me, I worked with the people who were in the Bronze Duke of Ed last year. I learned many skills for how to plan a outdoor trip from them, such as something that I would not think about. I had to have a detailed plan for the whole trip before we going to camp, that included the gear we had to bring with us, first aid information, the nearest hospital, food, transportation, as well as the final cost.

Creativity Reflection

As the passion for singing, I decided to join the senior concern choir at school this year. Rehearsal happens every Tuesday 8:00 to 9:15 and Thursday 7:30-8:30. During each rehearsal, we practice different pieces of song and singing skill. We usually start our morning rehearsal with singing skill, and then we begin working on our song. We divided in to four main parts: soprano, alto, basso and tenor. I am in both soprano and alto, because it depends on different types of song. As a new member of the school concern choir, I get the opportunity to learn about the structure of a choir, as I have never be in a formal choir before. I also get the chance to meet new people, and make friends with them.

Service Reflection

I participated in the Walk So Kids Can Talk 2015 activity on May, 03. I signed up for the walk at school and became a member of Mulgrave 2015 team. The 5 kilometre walk took place at David Lam Park in Vancouver. There were many people participated in this walk: kids, adults, families, and community organizations. The walk supports the Kids Help Phone and provides help and hope to kids everywhere. It started at 11 a.m. and I walked with  Mulgrave team. It only took us about one hour to finish the walking. I am glad that I could become a member of Mulgrave team and helped supporting it. I feel this is a special experience for me, therefore, I will keep tracking on this activity in the future.

Creativity Reflection

I chose to continue working on my music instrumental outside of school for my major creativity this year. I have my lesson with my teacher every Tuesday after school in Burnaby. In the past few months, I spent most of my spare time on practicing different music pieces with my teacher. Two hours practice every day in general. I can feel that I have a huge improvement on my skill, which I am proud of myself. After discussing with  my teacher, I decided to take the level test, which is happing in April. Therefore, I have to spend even more time on practising my pieces. There is also a performance coming up in March, I am really looking forward to this event.
