Welcome to week 2 for your new US Student Life announcements and news blog interface, which is also an extension of your new US Mulgrave eFolio: TheMulgraveCitizen @ https://pln.mulgrave.com/mulgravecitizen

This site will be the home to all your news and alerts about student happenings and opportunities for citizenship, service, CAS and social good throughout the year. You will get an email at the start of each school week with a link to the latest news and opportunities. You are also strongly encouraged to sign up for TMC email subscription or RSS feed (to iGoogle or Google Reader, for example). Parents, students and staff can also subscribe to site email or feeds (see top right sidebar for subscriptions). By doing so, you will receive the full text posting in your inbox/reader as soon as it is published, rather than receiving just a link via email. You will also receive any additional alerts about other student and school happenings. The Mulgrave community may also be able to follow TMC on Twitter in the future and receive regular tweets and alerts about Upper School Student Life.

FIGHTING CANCER CAN MAKE US ALL BELIEBERS.

As part of a movement for less cancer and more birthdays, The American Cancer Society created YouTube videos of birthday wishes from stars such as Justin Bieber. That video racked up more than 660,000 views. “Pop culture advertising gets the attention of teenagers,” wrote Ashley Engelman, the American Cancer Society’s communications and marketing project manager. “Teenagers, in turn, get the attention of their parents. And this is how we reach our target demographic.”

FROM FARMVILLE TO FARM RESCUE!

Everyone knows that FarmVille hooked about a gazillion Facebook users on caring for virtual crops. Farm Rescue , on the other hand, has decided to spin off the very popular game with an emphasis on social good and charity. Farm Rescue takes on alleged animal abuse in factory farms by asking users to build a virtual sanctuary for rescued hens. Users tend after their fowl wards, helping them practice natural behaviors and then “adopting” them out to good homes.

The game latched onto the enormously popular FarmVille in both content and style as a way to educate and raise awareness about the factory farm. Outside of the game, Farm Rescue also has an actions page where users can pledge their support, sign petitions or learn more.normously popular FarmVille in both content and style as a way to educate and raise awareness about the factory farm. HUMANITY STRIKES BACK!

The Canadian Red Cross is looking for youth volunteers for The Humanity Strikes Back Working Group and Students Club Action Network Work Group. The HSB Working Group has a mandate to plan, organize and help facilitate the Humanitarian Issues Promotion’s Humanity Strikes Back! youth conference in February. This two day conference aims to help high school aged youth gain the knowledge, skills, resources and confidence necessary to be leaders on global issues, specifically, children and war, the poverty disease cycle and natural disasters. Volunteers will receive comprehensive training on global issues, facilitation, leadership, event management, teamwork and the International Movement of the Red Cross. Once volunteers have completed their position with us, Certificates of Completion will be issued with the total number of volunteer hours and skills gained during the training.

The Canadian Red Cross is part of the largest and one of the oldest humanitarian organisations. They provide excellent training and great opportunities: “We work with people who are passionate about the issues and the work.” Contact Mr Wilson if you are interested or Melinda Mennie. Applications are due Friday September 16th, 2011 at 5:00pm.
