Once again this year, Mulgrave’s Upper School is supporting the Community First Foundation’s Backpack Buddies programme which makes sure that “at risk” kids have meals over the weekend; this programme is supported through our Advisory programme and via other teams where 1-2 times per year groups are asked to bring in food donations or money to support the collection of kid-friendly meals for children at schools on the North Shore and East Vancouver.
Advisories have been asked to join us again in helping us collect donations. Please ask your advisor teacher if your advisory has been signed up and if your group hasn’t been signed up yet offer to be a leader to help make it happen in your advisory.
Last year, Backpack Buddies provided over 16,000 backpacks of food to local kids in need. And Mulgrave supplied almost 1000 of those backpacks of food.
Join us this year to make sure vulnerable families have weekend meals. The typical cost per collection per advisee student in kind (taken from home pantry) or cash is approximately $10. You can also bring in $10 rather than food and we will do the shopping for you. If you join us for two collections this year, it’s the total equivalent cost of one inexpensive dinner out in Vancouver or one bag of shopping at a grocery store.
Want to be a Big Buddy?
This year we are also running a Mulgrave ‘Big Buddies’ programme with Admiral Seymour Elementary School in East Van which involves Mulgrave Upper School students visiting the school regularly and being “big buddies” helping in the classroom. If you would like to participate in the Big Buddies programme, you need to get involved in Backpack Buddies first through your advisory, club, team, family or individually. Engagement and help with Backpack Buddies are tickets to join Big Buddies so we can send you to make a difference for kids in need at Admiral Seymour.
