Pegah’s C.A.S. Log and Reflections (Minor)

For the sake of simplicity and ease, I have decided to create two HTML code layouts to use for all of my C.A.S. reflections. This is the second of the two: on it are the reflections for all of my minor C.A.S. commitments. The previous has all of my major C.A.S. reflections.
During the time I’ve spent in the art room, I’ve learned that it’s important to understand that not everybody will have the same skill level that I do in the arts. For example, some of the projects I’ve been assigned in class are too easy for me, but for others they are a challenge. This is important for me to know, as it will keep me from complaining about assignments. If I understand and respect everyone’s abilities, as well as my own, I will be able to complete tasks with peace of mind.
Minor Action Minor Service
So far in lessons, I have learned that I will only advance if I push myself, practice, and always abide by the instructor’s teachings. For example, I have not yet mastered the “snow-plow” stop on the ice. My instructor pointed out that my left leg/foot is dominant, and that in order to master this stop, I must focus on using both of my legs/feet equally. I will only achieve this with more practice and pushing myself to use that right leg more even if I stumble/fall momentarily.
I have chosen to change my minor service commitment to the Quest Food Exchange trip we took as an advising class. I value this trip because it has allowed me to see people’s true cooperative and loving nature in the service of others. Having had an opportunity to see how people can help others really increased my faith in humanity; many of the world’s problems can be easily solved, like hunger. For example, Quest Food Exchange has consecrated time and energy into gathering unwanted (but usable) foods and selling them at a low price for those out of work, experiencing financial difficulties, etc.

For the sake of simplicity and ease, I have decided to create two HTML code layouts to use for all of my C.A.S. reflections. Participating in weekly Farsi classes has taught me the significance of perseverance; I’ve learned to value hard work over natural talent. If I don’t complete the homework my teacher assigns or pay attention in class, I won’t progress as much as other students who do. Even if I have a natural talent in languages (in this case, Farsi), students who work harder than me will soon surpass my abilities in reading and writing if I don’t work as hard as them to reach my full potential. In short, this is my real-life experience of the Tortoise and the Hare. 😉

So far in lessons, I have learned that it is critical to remain calm at all times so as not to allow fear to take over. I’ve learned that if a horse is acting out (whether or not I am on it), I must avoid feelings of nervousness and listen to the instructions I am given, so that I learn how to handle/control a frightened/excited horse. Letting a surge of fear rush over me would make the situation worse, as losing confidence would make me weak and frighten/excite the horse even more. It is important never to give up or allow fear to take over!
During the time I have spent as part of the HeadsUp PeerAdvisors group, I have learned a lot about planning and organizing various events. I have realized that for one to be successful in planning an event, one must have many connections with others in order to obtain the necessary materials for that event. For example, we planned to create pink toques to celebrate Pink Day. The person who ordered the toques had to know which websites to use, who to talk to about where to keep the toques, etc. I also have noticed that the number of social connections one must have depends on the event. For small events, it is easy to have only one or two people do the job. For larger events, entire groups of people are needed.

Final C/A/S/ Reflection

The final C.A.S. reflection of the year will be on my minor creativity, open art room. For a couple weeks, I attended open art room on a regular basis to finish/catch up on a pottery project I had been working on for my “Magic of Mud” L.E.A.P. elective. Doing so allowed me to become better acquainted with my style of learning. I learned that I work best in quiet areas, with little or no people around me. This allows me to increase focus on my work and minimize distractions. Picking up on strategies to help myself learn is what we have been learning about in Life & Learning Skills 8, and my minor C.A.S. experience has really helped with that. I quite value this experience.

2014-2015 C/A/S Reflection Noº 7

This final C.A.S. reflection will be on my minor creativity, open art room. For a couple weeks, I attended open art room on a regular basis to finish/catch up on a pottery project I had been working on for my “Magic of Mud” L.E.A.P. elective. Doing so allowed me to become better acquainted with my style of learning. I learned that I work best in quiet areas, with little or no people around me. This allows me to increase focus on my work and minimize distractions. Picking up on strategies to help myself learn is what we have been learning about in Life & Learning Skills 8, and my minor C.A.S. experience has really helped with that.

2014-2015 C/A/S Reflection Noº 4

I have chosen my Farsi class as my major creativity C.A.S. commitment, and from this experience I have learned the importance of completing assigned homework and paying attention in class. The practice of new lessons must be done at home, and class time is for correcting mistakes and asking the teacher for help on areas in need of development. If the entire class does not complete their homework, then the teacher will be unable to do their job of teaching new concepts and the students will be forced to learn what they should have at home in class, thus resulting in the delay of new lessons and hindered general learning. With this new/reinforced knowledge, from now on I will do my best to ensure that all of my homework is completed, and that I stay engaged in class. Missing out on lessons and instructions is disadvantageous, as it results in lack of understanding of the given work.

CAS Reflections

1. Major Service: Me to We

From this experience, I learned about all the ways that Mulgrave contributes to the world (collaboration). I also learned a little about different countries where people there aren’t as fortunate as we are. In Me to We, I noticed that a small group of tenth and ninth graders were the ones that were really taking charge of the club. Since I had nothing to do, I decided to quit. However, the experience also allowed me to become a little more accustomed to doing service around the school.

2. Major Action: Swimming

In my swimming lessons, I became aware of the fact that I was a slower swimmer than everybody else (self awareness). However, I had very good technique. From this, I learned that technique matters more than speed; I noticed that everybody else was just rushing through the water.

3. Major Creativity: Farsi Class

I’ve learned a lot from my experiences in Farsi class. I’ve ranked top student for a while now, and everybody in the class respects me and acknowledges me as one of the best students. Recently, my teacher told me that she wanted me to skip to grade three Farsi (I’m currently in grade two). There are two years per grade, so really I’d be skipping year two of grade two and year one of grade three. Even though I’m talented in Farsi and do quite well in class and on tests, I know that I don’t always do my homework :p. When I do review the lessons and complete my homework, however, I notice a huge difference on how I do in class. I guess that I can say that what I’ve learned from this experience is that studying and reviewing lessons is quite important, no matter what.

1. Minor Service: Vow of Silence

Vow of Silence was not difficult, but I learned that it is not so easy to stay completely silent for one day. I had to constantly be aware of the fact that I had to stay silent and not talk or laugh. Vow of Silence was a good opportunity for me to learn about other countries in which children could not speak their thoughts and opinions. I consider myself lucky to have rights.

2. Minor Action: Tennis

Personally, I don’t consider myself to be a very good tennis player. However, I’ve found that I’ve improved tremendously since I started playing. From this experience, I’ve learned that if I keep trying my best, I will gradually improve. I also learned that I should not expect to be good tennis player after a few lessons; I should be happy that I’ve improved and keep myself confident and trying my best.

3. Minor Creativity: Open Art Room

I enjoyed going to the open art room to work on projects or to just hang out and make art. I find that art is a great way to express myself, and I’ve noticed that sometimes my best artworks are produced incidentally. I’ve also learned that art is calming and that expressing sad or angry emotions through art can help to get rid of them.

CAS Goal Reflection No. 4

This is a reflection about my current creativity goals for CAS. My major creativity commitment is the art class that I take every week. I learn new techniques for sketching every class. I consider myself to be rather good at sketching/painting (mostly sketching) horses, and there isn’t much else that I excel at drawing in art. I have improved in sketching according to my art teacher. I suppose that means that I have achieved my goal of improving in sketching. My minor creativity commitment is attending the open art room on Tuesdays, which I am doing. Since I have started visual arts, I will have something to work on in the open art room every week.
